What about a Summer in Athens?
Choose Athens for your Summer City Break
There are a lot of Summer activities in Athens. Yes, Athens is a busy city even during the Summer, a time when most visitors will travel to the islands looking for sun, sea and sand. You can choose to live the metropolis in full since there are lots of things to do everyday. Almost all day long.
If you find yourself in Athens during the Summer, take your time. Do not fret, take one step at a time, as there are loads of things to do. Here are some tips for an Athens city-escape. There you can combine business with pleasure and leisure. You will soon discover that Summer is, in fact, one of the best times to visit the Greek capital.
Explore Athens city center for vivid visuals
The center of Athens is the most vibrant part of the city. It is home to the imposing Acropolis but not only. There are several picturesque areas to wander around on foot. It is easy to visit Plaka, Monastiraki and Thiseio, all of them scattered quite close to each other, around the base of the ancient rock.
The quaint streets are full of shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants, and street vendors. You’ll be able to see ruins unearthed by excavations, as well as historical landmarks full of splendor. If what you look for is a taste of the ancient Greek culture in the shortest possible time, visit the Acropolis museum; or just walk around aimlessly feeling the ancient aura of the region.
Pause for a quick light lunch, or have a soft ice-cream. Night or day, the centre is buzzing with life, and you’ll fall in love with Anafiotika, an old historical neighborhood which is the locals’ favourite.
Go for a shopping spree
As an alternative to shopping down the city centre and if you are in the mood for splashing out, give Kifissia a try. Kifissia, a high-profile suburban area, connected to the center via metro, is an excellent choice.
Being one of the most posh areas in Athens, there you can find haute couture pieces, high fashion brands, and a world-class shopping area among nice wide streets. There are boutique cafés as well as gourmet restaurants to enjoy during a pause of your shopping time. It is much prettier than downtown Athens, and it also has a glamorous nightlife for you to wind down after shopping.
The area of Maroussi, rather close to Kifissia, is an excellent choice for you to stay in Athens during the Summer, especially for business travellers: this is Athens business centre.
Combine a shopping visit to Kifissia with an iced-coffee (frappé) break as time tends to fly when you go window shopping. Don’t neglect a visit to the Golden Hall and The Mall, also in Maroussi. Both of them have all the amenities of a great shopping centre (yet not much of the flair you can find in Kifissia).
And if you want to cool down… Stay by the pool
Temperatures are on gradual ascent in Athens during the Summer, July and August are the hottest months. Make sure your city accommodation of choice offers a refreshing pool for you to cool down in case you’re staying far from the coast.
Mostly during the weekend, the southern beaches of Athens tend to get very busy. Those working in the city choose Saturdays and Sundays to rush to the seaside for a dose of vitamin sea! If you wish for a quiet and refreshing rest, an outdoor swimming pool is an invaluable plus.
Whether you want to catch some sun without lifting a finger, or just want to relax in the evening sipping a cocktail or two, a swimming pool in Athens is definitely an oasis you should not underestimate.
