HERAKLION FOR FOODIES
Herb’s Garden Restaurant
Fine Dining in Heraklion
Heraklion, the capital of Crete is going through a Romantic Renaissance, with always more people choosing it as a final destination. Instead of just being a landing spot, comfortable to reach other areas on the island, the city is seeing an increase in visitors that choose Heraklion as a city break destination. And it’s a wise choice. Today, we want to inspire you with our experience in one of the finest restaurants in town. The occasion? A new summer menu that definitely puts the Herb’s Garden among the best restaurants on Crete.
Heraklion is much more than the Palace of Knossos or the fantastic Archaeological Museum (which you shouldn’t miss by the way). Heraklion is a cosmopolitan destination with stunning hotels, a sparkling nightlife for all ages and a superb choice for foodies.
The Cretan diet has stunned researchers for years ever since discovering that, even during the hard times of war and occupation, Cretans enjoyed the most healthy condition.
Residents of rural Crete in the 1950s ate significant amounts of olive oil, olives, fish, fruits, vegetables (mostly wild greens), and nuts. Their diet included moderate amounts of wine and cheese and reduced quantities of meat, milk, and eggs. Food at the core of this diet provided fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

This tradition never died. On the contrary, it grew and expanded all over the world. An ever increasing population is trying to imitate the Cretan diet at home.
A recent survey has also shown that people visiting Crete put its cuisine among the most important reasons to visit the island. Therefore, if you are looking to combine the utmost Mediterranean tradition, with amazing views and a modern touch in taste, you simply need to head to the finest balcony in town.
Herb’s Garden, a Choice for Foodies
A pleasant environment blends the beautiful views of the Venetian Fortress with refined tastes and fragrances of the Cretan mountains. The abundant use of local ingredients together with a clever combination of Mediterranean recipes result in a clever proposal for the palate.
Exarchos Delibasis, head chef of the Herb’s Garden, explained to us that combining his pluriennial experience in another foodie hotspot, such as Italy, and his Greek roots, he managed to create a menu that blatantly reflects the best of the Mediterranean tradition. The use of Local ingredients inspires the Handmade Carob Pappardelle with chicken bites, lemon zest, and mature Cretan graviera cheese. As well as the Linguini with Salmon, sage, and Cretan rakomelo (a tasty version of raki with honey and spices).
A special mention must go to their salads. We loved the creative Green Salad, prepared with fresh greens, roasted almonds, chickpea rusks, xigalo (probably the tastiest local creamy cheese) and a touch of oranges. For those preferring the staple of the Greek menu, their version of the Greek Salad won’t disappoint.
Herb’s Garden for Mini (and not so mini) Foodies
We all know how a tiny palate can be difficult to please. Their Beef burger with fresh fries and yogurt dip (instead of unhealthy mayo ) left our kids happy and asking for more!
Other must-try dishes include the most tender Slowly cooked lamb with mashed potatoes and thyme. Or the Beef fillet with staka. Staka is one of the greatest dressings of the local tradition. It can be enjoyed with fried potatoes, with meat, or with roasted bread. Staka is a roux dip made from goat milk fat, a favorite in Cretan cuisine.
Even their sweets have a local twist that makes desserts stand out with a touch of genuine flavors. The Galaktoboureko Surprise and the Chocolate Soufflè with Kaimaki (a mastic flavored ice cream) are among the most delicious sweets. I’ve never finished a dinner in such a great fashion.
Whether you are looking for the finest Cretan cuisine or a taste of the authentic local tradition, the Herb’s Garden a fine choice. Mix it with the beautiful views of Heraklion’s old harbor, and you will be dining in heaven.
